Correctly Installing a Mechanical Seal

Correctly Installing a Mechanical Seal

Installation counts for a lot of the longevity of mechanical seals, with a great many failures actually being traced back to mistakes during this crucial point. Because of this, it is essential to make sure that you do it properly, as it will not only afford your seals a longer lifespan, but will also keep your facility, machinery and personnel better protected.

These steps will help you to ensure that you do it properly

  1. Before installing the seal, take care to read the instructions for your cartridge or cassette-type assembly carefully. This will help you familiarise yourself with their workings before you get started.
  2. Carefully remove any rough and sharp edges (burrs) from the shaft. If need be, replace the shaft or sleeves if they are worn.
  3. Inspect the seal-housing too. If you find any rough edges on it or the face, carefully clear these too.
  4. Before enacting seal assembly, you need to first lubricate the sleeve or shaft lightly. Use a silicon lubricant for this task. At all costs, you should avoid using oil on any seal faces. It is best to leave them alone, so don’t try to disassemble the unit.
  5. Where flexibly mounted inserts are being used, it is important to ensure that they are lightly lubricated with oil and pressed in lightly. O-rings, on the other hand, should be mounted on the back shoulder by being pressed into the gland-cavity.
  6. If you must install and service mechanical seals yourself, you should take care to closely follow the installation instructions that have been provided by the manufacturer.

There is an Easier Way to Install Mechanical Seals

When doing installations yourself, there is always a chance of making a mistake. This may well lead to premature seal failure, resulting in downtime or even damages and injuries.

It is best to have a mechanical seal supplier assist you with installations when you need them, for peace of mind that it is being done properly.
